Obesity, what’s really behind it and how does it affect my health?

Let’s begin understanding the term obesity, as one often thinks “fat” or “large” “heavy”; its definition shows to be a complex, chronic disease with several causes that lead to excessive body fat and sometimes, poor health.

A healthy weight sets the stage for how our muscles, bones, brain, heart and other organs will play their parts smoothly and cohesively for many years. Think of how much pressure our knees carry if we been overweight/obese for many years often decades.

One condition strongly influenced by body weight is type 2 diabetes. The health risks article shares in a Nurses health study, where 114,000 middle age women were followed for a period of 14 years, the risk of developing diabetes was 93 times higher among women who had a body mass 22 (2023).

The relationship between cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease and stroke, is that body weight is directly associated with various cardiovascular risk factors, as BMI increases so do blood pressure, low- density lipoprotein “bad cholesterol”, triglycerides, blood sugar, and inflammation. Being overweight (BMI 25-30) increased the risk of ischemic stroke by 22 percent, and obesity increases it by 64 percent.

Mental health and Quality of life- studies shows high rates of obesity and depression. In an analysis of 17-cross sectional studies, found individuals who were obese were more likely to have depression than people with healthy weights. The relationship between depression and obesity, appears to be a two-way street, depression often induced weight gain, and/or weight gain can produce depression. Asthma, Poor sleep, obstructive sleep apnea, been linked to obesity (Health risk, 2023). Between 50 percent and 75 percent of individuals with OSA are obese. Other negative impact from fat cells, especially those stored around the waist, secrete hormones and other substances that fire inflammation.
